North East India is a region in the northeastern part of the India. It comprises of eight states and has a total population of 45,936,000 (2011 census). The population density of North East India is much lower than the national average of 324 people per square kilometer. This is mainly due to the fact that the region is mostly hilly, with a large proportion of forest cover. The terrain of the region is mostly hilly or mountainous, and this has prevented large-scale settlement. Additionally, the region has a small population due to its relatively remote location, making it difficult for large numbers of people to settle in the region.
