China is the most populous country in the world, with a population exceeding 1.4 billion. It is no surprise, then, that the countrys cities have some of the highest population densities in the world. In particular, the cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou are among the most densely populated cities in the world. The population density of these cities varies significantly, however, so it is important to understand the differences in order to appreciate the complexity of the population dynamics in China.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong is the most densely populated city in the world, with a population density of 7,045 people per square kilometer. This is largely due to the fact that Hong Kong is a small city, with a total area of just 1,104 square kilometers. The city is also a financial hub, which attracts large numbers of people from all over the world. With a population of over 7 million, Hong Kong has more people than some entire countries.
Shanghai
Shanghai is the second most densely populated city in China, with a population density of 6,250 people per square kilometer. With a population of over 24 million, Shanghai is the largest city in China, and the most populous city in the world. It is an important industrial and financial center, and is home to some of the worlds most iconic skyscrapers. The citys population is spread across an area of 3,800 square kilometers.
Beijing
Beijing is the third most densely populated city in China, with a population density of 5,250 people per square kilometer. It is the political and economic center of China, and is home to the countrys most important political institutions. With a population of over 21 million, Beijing is the second largest city in China, and the fourth largest in the world. The city covers an area of 4,000 square kilometers.
Guangzhou
Guangzhou is the fourth most densely populated city in China, with a population density of 3,800 people per square kilometer. It is the largest city in southern China, and has a population of over 13 million. Guangzhou is an important industrial and commercial center, and is home to some of Chinas largest companies. The city covers an area of 3,400 square kilometers.
Population Density in Other Chinese Cities
Although Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou are the most densely populated cities in China, other cities in the country also have high population densities. Shenzhen, for example, has a population density of 5,400 people per square kilometer, while Tianjin has a population density of 4,800 people per square kilometer. Other cities with high population densities include Hangzhou (4,200 people per square kilometer), Nanjing (3,900 people per square kilometer) and Chengdu (3,700 people per square kilometer).
